Basketball

Last weekend both my team and Katy's team had a good weekend. Our team played at home and beat Gussing. This was our 3rd win in a row and a good step in making sure we make the playoffs.
Katy's team then played on Sunday. They played against a team that is new to the league, and won by 50 or so. Katy's team was up 30-7 in the 1st quarter and although they cooled off a little bit the other 3 quarters they still won by quite a few. Katy ended up with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 assists. It was fun watching her team play and even though they won by a lot they could have won by a lot more. They missed quite a few easy lay-ups or shots around the hoop, but I guess there will always be game where it seems like shots just dont want to go in.
This weekend they are off as they have two games next weekend. My team plays in Vienna and can really help our playoff cause with a win.

My Birthday

Last Sunday (9 days ago) was my birthday. (Check out the candle on my birthday cake). It was on Sunday and because my team had a game in St. Poelten and Katy had a game in Salzburg we were not able to go anywhere. We both got home pretty late from our games so we decided to do something on Monday instead. We had originally planned on going to one of the lakes in the alps, but when we left on Monday morning it was extremely foggy and thought if we weren't able to see the mountains around the lake maybe we should change our plan.
So, on our way we changed our mind and decided to go to the city of Salzburg. Salzburg is where Mozart was born and lived and also where the Sound of Music is centered. All of these places are possible to visit but we decided on something else. In the middle of the city there is a big hill and on the hill there is a castle which dates to the 11th century.
Here we took a tour of the castle and we were able to see the torture chamber, the rooms where the kings used to live, the old "toilet" they used to have, a real chastity belt and so other things from way back in the day. We also had a chance to go up to the lookout at the top of the castle where we had an awesome view of the whole city. Even though it was foggy we could see a lot of Salzburg and what the city really looked like.
Even though we had to change our original plan we had a great day in Salzburg.

Here is a link to a video on YouTube that shows the castle and its views.

XLV Champs!!

PACKERS ARE SUPER BOWL CHAMPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This weekend we stayed up to watch the Super Bowl and it was a great game! A little too close at the end. Katy and I were sitting on the edge of the couch the whole 4th quarter and both said we thought our hearts were going to explode towards the end, when the Packers got their last fieldgoal and the Steelers got the ball back. It was great to see that the good guys won!
For the game we went over to a friend's house to watch it. We hooked our computer to the TV so we could watch our slingbox on the TV. (Slingbox allows you to hook up to your TV back home through the internet and watch whatever kind of TV you have - Satellite TV or cable. When you turn the slingbox on you connect right to the TV and control the TV like you were in the room back home watching it. Its pretty cool) The time here is 7 hours difference from back in WI and because of this the game was on quite late here. When we got home it was 5:00 am. It was very late but it didn't matter we'd do it again in a heartbeat.
For the game we had some good Super Bowl food - pulled pork sandwiches, baked potato wedges, taco dip and even made some cheese heads. We were ready to go. I guess there was a Super Bowl party somewhere in Vienna with quite a few people, but we heard there were a lot of Steelers fans. It would have been fun to go but we wouldn't want to rub it in there face too much :)
And to Randy Jackson who said on American Idol last week that the Packers weren't going to win the Super Bowl - What's Up now!? (I hope that foot in your mouth doesn't effect your judging ability)

Living in Austria - Training Wheels?

The past couple of days it has gotten pretty nice outside and tomorrow (Monday) it is supposed to get up in the mid-50's. With the warm weather people are starting to go out for walks and I have seen quite a few kids out with their parents. Many little kids on bikes learning to ride. Here though they teach kids to ride bikes a little bit different. Instead of taking a normal bike and putting training wheels on it they take a normal bike and remove the pedals and chain. This way the little kid has to push himself along with his feet and learns to balance himself this way. Then once he can balance himself while pushing along the parents get a bike with a chain and pedals so the kid can ride a real bike.
Its different than how we do it back home but it seems like a pretty good idea. Although I do have to say I did see a kid having a little temper tantrum the other day when he was out for a walk with his mom and dad. They were all walking together on the sidewalk next to our apartment building and I think the kid was tired. He put both of his feet on the ground and starting whining and wouldn't move. His parents tried to coax him along but he wasn't having it. I didn't watch long enough to see what happened, but maybe if parents took the pedals off the bike they could carry a rope around. So, when the kid got tried they could hook up the rope to the handle bars and pull the little guy along. Maybe that would be too much work for the parent but at least the kid would still have to do something by keeping his balance.

Living in Austria

Here in Austria you have to be 18 to drive. If you are between 16 and 18 you cant drive a car but are allowed to drive a dirt bike/moped. I think the engine has to be a certain size - so that you cant go very fast. Some of the guys on the younger team drive these. If they have practice after us, when we come out of the gym there will be 5 or 6 dirt bikes/moped all lined up.

2 wins

This past weekend both Katy's team and my team got wins. My team played against Güssing on Saturday at home. Güssing is not having the best year this year, but they did beat us the first time we played them. We were out to get revenge and show we are the better team. Throughout the game we had leads where we were up by 15 or 20, then they would bring the score back within a few points. This happened a couple times but in the end we won 91-72. I think if we could have prevented their runs we would have been able to win by 30 or more. We play them 2 more times this year so maybe we will be able to get a great win in one or both of them.
Katy also had a game this weekend. They played Innsbruck, a team that also beat them the first time they played. In the first game they lost by 9, but in this game they won by 10. It was a back and forth game the entire game. In the 4th quarter one of the other team's best players fouled out and Katy's team took advantage with a press and were able to push the score out to 10 points. It was great to watch, especially as Katy had 22 points and 10 rebounds.
For the game, a friend and I took drums to the game. Over here for the basketball games there are people that bang on drums to make noise. For Katy's game we were able to borrow some of the the drums from my team and bang on them for Katy's game. We had a good time doing it and would like to think that we helped out a little. :)
